Getting a dog is a huge life decision and the responsibilities that come along with a dog are commonly underestimated. Today, we discuss all of the questions you should ask yourself to decide whether or not right now is a good time for a dog.
This is a great episode to listen with your kids, spouse, or anyone who lives in your home, because this decision is theirs as well. Plus, you want to make sure you're not the only one doing all the work, because raising puppies takes a village!
Some of the questions we go over are..
How committed are you?
Are you about to go through a big change? Promotion, move, baby?
Do you already have another pet? Will they get along with a dog? (Stay tuned for episode #22)
Is everyone else you live with on board?
Is your lifestyle dog proof or adjustable to fit a dog?
Are you willing to puppy proof your house?
Can I have a dog where I live? Breed or size restrictions? Think ahead!
Is your dog allowed in the house? House rules?
Are you willing to spend money on quality food? Regular check ups? Not just the minimum?
Are you willing to spend money on midday check ins or have consistent friends/fam help?
Are you going to be responsible? Leash laws? Training for separation anxiety? Poop removal?
Are you willing to crate train?
What is your living situation for the next several years?
Get real with yourself.. How stable are you?
Will you go above and beyond to learn safety tips? Will you find mentors if you're over your head or unsure of something?
Will you go the extra mile to learn signs of health versus sickness? Are you willing to treat sickness?
Will you commit to learning about dogs in general? Body language, behaviors, how to socialize, etc.
What if your dog is anxious, aggressive, naughty, rambunctious? Especially for puppies, are you committed to this new relationship with your dog though the hard times?
