Learning a dog's body language makes it super simple to know if it's okay to approach them or not. However, the average dog parent isn't that confident in dog body language, so this episode is to help you get a better understanding of how dogs work.

You can use this approach to meeting dogs for any type of dog: confident, happy go lucky, anxious, fearful, you name it. With these 9 tips, you'll feel confident in your dog knowledge, which will radiate when you're in their presence. Remember, energy is everything and confidence is key!

STEPS (&TIPS) TO APPROACHING A NEW DOG:

  1. Make sure the dog actually wants to be greeted.

  2. Don't create excitement with loud noises or baby voices. Be calm and assertive throughout.

  3. No touching, no talking, no eye contact until the dog is calm and then you can greet them or play.

  4. What you want to do instead is...Start with nose , eyes , and then ears! Start with letting them sniff you, then they'll likely look at you and get start to get comfortable and then you can let them go from there.

  5. Turn around with your back towards them and without eye contact let them sniff you at their own pace. Don’t turn around until they’ve been able to get to know you. If a dog is timid and you're visiting someones home, feel free to sit or kneel on the ground with your back towards them so that they don't feel threatened to come up and sniff you.

  6. If the dog is timid, fearful, anxious or unsure try to avoid quick moves, loud noises, or dramatic energy. Try to be predictable and safe for them.

  7. When the dog opens up and invites you to pet them make sure you only reward calm behavior. So if they're jumping on you or dancing around and barking that's not a good time to pet them, because you’re enabling that behavior.

  8. Never hover over a dog and always pet them under the chin and not over their head.

  9. If a dog is extremely timid or showing signs that you are making them anxious, avoid eye contact and don’t force the situation. Ignore the behavior of anxiety, don’t feed into it and let them come to you on their own time.
